Welcome back to another Two-Minute Tuesday with Keith and Sophia from Target Property Spain!
This week’s question is a common one for anyone relocating to Spain:
Can I bring my car with me to Spain?
🚗 The short answer is yes — but there are a few important things to keep in mind depending on where your car is coming from.
🇪🇺 If your car is coming from an EU country:
- Good news! The process is fairly straightforward.
- Your car needs to be roadworthy and registered with the Spanish authorities.
- You can drive it in Spain for up to six months before you must register it with Spanish plates.
- If the car is more than four years old, it will need to pass the ITV (Spain’s version of the MOT test).
🌍 If your car is coming from outside the EU:
- The process is more complicated and will likely involve import duties and taxes.
- We highly recommend working with a Gestor — an administrative expert in Spain who can handle the paperwork and legalities for you.
- As with EU cars, you’ll need to get Spanish plates within 6 months, and the car must pass the ITV if it’s over four years old.
🛑 Important: After 6 months, regardless of where your car comes from, you must switch to Spanish plates if you plan to keep it here.
If you’re planning a move to the Costa del Sol or anywhere in Spain and have questions about relocating your car — or anything else property-related — feel free to reach out. We’re here to help!
